Burping granny

Filed under: cool peeps — by altari @ 3:43 am

We, the whole family, call her Nenek (or Granny, in English.) Ow, not that she’s my grandmother. She’s just a 71 year-old masseur who’s, amazingly, still kicking and alive (otherwise she’d just massage herself instead, wouldn’t she?)

When she first arrived at our house to massage me, she burped. And when she was massaging me, she burped again and again. I thought that was just her old-age habit. But then, as if she could read my wondering mind, she explained to me that she would burp everytime someone needed her help and when she is massaging her client (so I suppose it’s like her “sensor” thingy.) In her opinion, there is some kinda unhealthy air within the unwell muscles and that air has to be drawn out, and at this point she usually burps. Meanwhile, I failed to reach the common sense while trying to picture her explanation in my mind *sigh*

On top of it all, Nenek is a very nice old woman. Very polite. She, in an undeniable way, brings warmth to everyone in the house every time she comes.

Anyway, I still don’t get the logic behind the ‘unhealthy air’ and ‘burp’ until now. Maybe I should just ask her again next time. Or can anyone please explain the mechanism (whadda…) to me?

  1. Every time i get massaged either by a professional or a friend I burp when they touch me. The massaging releases the build up or whatever it is in my muscles and I burp~ possibly acidity release? When I used to massage people i would also burp, so I stopped massaging people. If anyone knows or understands this bodily function please fill us in!

  3. I’m surfing the net trying to find a reason on why I started to burp recently when I’m receiving a massage. And I found you guys having the same question. I hope to find a scientific explanation soon as it puzzles me. I know, my masseuses told me it’s good that I know how to release the wind in my body. But what is ‘wind’ scientifically?

  4. I just had a reflexology massage a couple of days ago. The masseur didn’t burp, at-all. I didn’t either. Now ‘not burping’ feels funny to me.

  5. My guess is actually that the massage makes both the persons receiving and giving the massage control their breathing when force is being applied. This is a very common reaction.

Basically you hold your breath while being pressed upon which causes you to actually swollow some air, which eventually needs to be released again… BURP!

So in fact air is not being “released” from your body it is actually being added to the stomach during the procedure instead.

How is that for common sense?
